March 5th of this year was the 30th anniversary of when GB won the Mid Continent conference tournament for their 1st NCAA D1 tourney berth. It was just a fantastic night as I believe Brown County arena was sold out and I got to experience the "running onto the floor" that students do when their team clinches an NCAA berth. I remember I got calls the next day that people saw me on ESPN as I got hung up right in front of a camera as I tried to "storm the court". Just a great night that I wish every UWGB student could have experienced.
Today it's been exactly 30 years since UWGB faced Michigan State in the '91 tourney. It was the only tournament that I was a student on campus for so it was special to me even though GB would make 4 more tournaments after that. They lost 60-58 that day on a heartbreaking shot at the buzzer. But truth be told, I think all of us could truly say we were "just happy to be there" as it was sort of the coming out party for Dick and Tony Bennett and UW-Green Bay basketball in general to the rest of the nation.
I was away from UWGB for 1st semester of that school year but fortunately came back just in time in February '91. That whole semester was one of my favorites, and UWGB basketball helped make it memorable.
As a side note, this coming Saturday you will see UW Green Bay represented on both sides of the Virginia vs. Ohio matchup at 6 PM Saturday Night. You've got UWGB alum Tony Bennett coaching Virginia vs. Ohio who has the son of ex-UW Green Bay forward Dean Vander Plas starting for them. It's too bad that someone will have to go home after that game, but it's a game that will bring back fond memories of the team from 30 years ago that was a blast to watch.
