I Have a few things to say about several posts. First RP40. Up tempo style does not mean poor defense. It does mean more possessions for both teams. It is a style meant to wear the other team down. It is obvious that the fans of Green Bay prefer the slower pace basketball. I understand the frustration with the inconsistent play of Darner's teams on many nights. I am sure he felt the same way at the end of many of those games. I am also sure the players felt the same frustrations. It is always much easier to be a critic when you are not the one doing the job. Darner did not have a lot of support from his Athletic Director so I am sure that made his job incredibly difficult. (I will explain why I say this in a moment) Darner's job was to find players who could be competitive every night and win the Horizon League. (all out of Wisconsin according to numerous unhappy fans) I find it interesting that now one fan's expectation is be competitive every night and finish in the top 5. Top 5??? It wasn't good enough that Darner finished in the top 3. Darner was set up to fail at his job. Why do I say this? He had an athletic director who did not hire him. Apparently that is a big problem for athletic directors and their egos I guess. Darner's team had to play a ridiculous schedule of money games-5 last year. Why?? I would assume to make money for the athletic department. Why was it the boys basketball coaches job to raise so much money for the athletic department?? So you play a ridiculous schedule before conference starts and your team is tired physically from all the travel and mentally from losing. But the Athletic Director wanted the easy money. The few people on here make assumptions about Darner's personality and what he was or was not doing when I highly doubt you really know what was truly occurring. I am sure once our lives return to something normal the leaders will invest in better scheduling. Darner is gone and the Chancellor and Athletic Director will never do to Will Ryan what was done to Darner. Will Ryan has the protection of his father and the community. Lots of excuses here. So he had to play some tough games? Big deal. Wardle went on the road and beat Miami. Darner never had that big win despite the frequent opportunities. That's the ADs fault? Darner had the easiest schedules at GB in years. Why? The conference is the worst its been since GB joined it. Also, we understand RP40. Basketball is a game of possessions. Darners teams simply gave up too many points per possession.

Do we have any idea on the tempo we will play at this season?

There are a lot of mysteries about this team. Who will play and how will they play being two of the biggest. The program has kept much of that under wraps so not only will it be a surprise for the fans it will be a surprise for the first few opponents. One week away! Hopefully

Apparently you are not able to handle a difference of opinion or someone who is a fan of Darners. Kudos to Wardle for beating Miami on the road. Quite an accomplishment. Money games are not designed for the mid major to come in and beat the high major. They are a way for the mid major programs to make money. It is very unlikely that a mid major is going to beat the high major, obviously these games wouldn't happen if that was a common occurrence. Yes Darner's teams had to play tough games, they were to make money and those losses should have been expected by anyone who understands basketball. But it is not common for a program to play 5 money games and that responsibility lies with the Athletic Director. Why would an AD want the team to be .500 before conference play begins? Since the Athletic Director did not hire Darner it would appear he did not want the program to be successful. Contrary to what armchair quarterbacks think players do get physically and mentally worn down from playing difficult teams, travel time and the difficult schedule. That can hurt their play in games they have the potential to win. Any team that gets beat gave up too many points per possession. That holds true for all teams not just those under Darner.

Darner had the program at its lowest point in 20 years. Its as simple as that. RPI doesn't lie.

In retrospect Darner was a bad fit, it's as simple as that. The program needs someone with a community or state connection. If you don't have that you need to develop one. It didn't happen. Herbst would have been a better fit. It took a lot of guts for the school to make this move. It was the right one. I wish Darner and the rest of the staff nothing but good things in the future.

In the most recent public report available Green Bay had men's basketball revenue of $1,874,827 and expenses of $1,874,827. This is a certified report using a standard format, meaning basketball is not making money to spend on other sports. Every dollar that was generated by men's basketball was spent on men's basketball. The program in the previous year reported income and expenses of $1.954 million. Despite having to play more money games they were making less money. It is no secret attendance was down and therefore ticket revenue was down.
Also, from the category of public information. Charles Guthrie started at GB on 10/17/2017. Green Bay agreed to play in the Gazelle tournaments on 3/7/2017. Some combination of MEG and Coach Darner agreed this was a good idea. That is significant because playing in this has been a loser on the court, off the court and in the bank account. Green Bay went 0-4 in the high major games they played but 3-1 against mid and low majors. The players were worn down from this which had a snowball effect on the season. The program made less than $250,000 instead of $400,000 that buy games could have generated. I suppose it doesn't matter because they aren't playing it this year but GB was only going to get $100,000 to play 2 buy games, one home mid major and one road mid major game all while paying all of their own travel costs. They probably wouldn't have netted much money from that type of arrangement. This is something GB should NEVER agree to again. The current athletic director didn't book this deal and to cancel it was going to cost a lot of money. It is hard to lay blame for this deal with the current administration at Green Bay. Now if they book something like this again in the future I will be the first to lay blame with the current athletic director.
I would prefer to celebrate his accomplishments in GB instead of using misinformation to bicker about who was at fault. Bickering about his departure doesn't change things.
Also, since this is the 2020-21 expectations thread I am excited to point out that we are 3 days away from the season starting!

Don’t know if it was mentioned previously, but Blayton Williams will miss the season due to injury.

It’s tough Leon Ayers having 15 points for Mercer and tank doing well and starting for drake but it was hard to see if tank was going to be the same after his injury.

Considering the circumstances, I’m considering this a “redshirt/walk-on” year.
I just would like them to be competitive and improve throughout the year. That’s all I ask.
Since it’s highly unlikely we will get to cheer them on in person anyway I’m fine with this not being a “banner” type season.
I just hope Amari is featured in the offense enough where he won’t want to transfer after years end.

I think 10 conference wins is probably realistic. The team will improve throughout the year, but so will the rest of the conference. This year is more about finding out which players belong at this level, so I hope outside of PJ and Amari, who are our two best players, we use a deep rotation.
