Since when did we set our standards so low of hiring a D3 guy? People are setting the bar so low out there. This was a terrible article

Unless someone has insider info, it is pretty hard to come up with a list without naming the obvious options. Who would have come out and said Linc Darner last time around coming up from Florida Southern? If the right coach for the program is a D3 guy, hire the D3 guy. At the end of the day, lets find the right guy for the program.
The points about the salary are interesting though. Many D1 assistants at P6 programs would have to take a pay cut. Considering the cost of living in GB and that this is one of only 357 D1 opportunities, I believe many would take a realistic pay cut. The opportunity to sit in that main chair may never come again.

People are sheep. We just follow the herd, sometimes to our own detriment. If the first person to put out a list said Dante Jackson from Grambling then others would repeat it. If someone said Lance Randall or Drew Diener others would repeat that too. Hell, if people said Dan Hartfield people would repeat that to.
That article isn't good because it is written by someone with at best a working knowledge of GB and at worst a bias against GB. It's writer assumes little old GB is in trouble and not able to hire anyone decent.
The Venci article about Gary is equal trash. The kids we are going to be recruiting were not alive when Gary "stopped" Jason Kidd. Hell, most of the kids weren't alive when Jason Kidd was a relevant NBA player. Older people need to stop thinking their youth is relavant to the youth of today. If it were, more than 700 people would go to SNC games to see Gary. What was Mike Heidemann's record at SNC? I don't know but I am guessing it was good. That isn't to say Gary is the next Mike but we shouldn't just assume that he is the next Dick or Tony either. Gary might be the right guy but for anyone to say they shouldn't do a deep search and just give it to him is weak. For anyone to say online shut the lights out if they don't hire Gary is insane. The program will survive if for some reason it is deemed that he isn't the right fit.
When Tod K got the job it was only after Steve Merfeld turned it down to go to Evansville.
When Brian Wardle got the job he beat out Porter Moser, Tim Carter, Gary, Jon Harris and Greg Gard amongst others.
Linc Darner got the job with help from connections. The candidate pool that time included Gary, Travis Steele, Eric Konkol, Bacari Alexander, Brian Barone, Dane Fife and Chris Lowery amongst others.
So here I sit. I don't know who will be the next coach but I know the job will attract a wide variety of people. As was mentioned above it very well could be a D3 guy but it might not be as this type of job doesn't come around often and lots of people will be interested. If you trust Charles to evaluate talent then GB will be in good shape. Far better than the online sheep think.

How about someone off the Bo Ryan tree? What is Gary Close doing nowadays? I know Rob Jeter is at Western Ill, but could he be interested. He can recruit Milwaukee better than Linc ever did and somehow managed to get to 2 NCAA tourneys with UWM, while TK, BW, and Linc only got to 1 between the 3 of them.

Jeter is like one game over 500 against Division one opponents we can do better than that.

Names of interest according to Scott Venci [ Link] Gary Grzesk Ben Johnson Brad Soderberg Joe Krabbenhoft Jimmie Foster I just started to follow GB basketball toward the end of Wardle’s era at GB and therefore didn’t really know of Jimmie Foster at the time. Quite honestly I didn’t know anything about Jimmie Foster until a week ago. Long story short, in the reading of the attached Venci article, talking with other GB fans and his bio on Bradley athletics, it seems clear to me Jimmy is the best candidate for this position. See below for why I think that: -Communication with boosters, public, he is marketable! -Recruiting- “everyone knows Jimmy” - Success. Lots of it at GB and now at Bradley. He’s earned his shot. Lastly, His pride in GB basketball is very evident and that means it all. Do the right thing Mr. Guthrie and hire Jimmie Foster!

Names of interest according to Scott Venci [ Link] Gary Grzesk Ben Johnson Brad Soderberg Joe Krabbenhoft Jimmie Foster I am going to assume this isn't the best list Green Bay can come up with for candidates. This list doesn't scream we want the best candidates we can get. This list screams lets try to appeal to nostaglia. It screams maybe if we reconnect to the past we can sell more tickets and get more donations. We can become relevant in Green Bay again. I have a hard time believing that will happen at least to the levels that might be expected. They better have season tickets already sold and large donations in hand before thinking this will work. A lot of the people who cared about Bennett ball back in the day currently reside at Nicolet Memorial Park. For many of those who are still with us are they really going to come back after 18 years away. If they do come back are they really going to come full force and will they stay long term? How long does the GB program have to live in the shadows of Bennett ball? If we always go back to the past what will we do when run out of Bennett connections? Gary very well may be the right guy. I want him the be the guy based on his coaching ability, not some connection to 2.5 decades ago. Ben Johnson is an extremely nice guy. However, he is a guy that has no relevant head coaching experience. He is a name that at this point is very obscure in GB. He has his strongest recruiting connections to Australia and New Zealand. Areas that GB can't afford to recruit. Wardle wanted to recruit there too but we didn't have money for that. Honestly, Ben Johnson's resume gets laughed out of the office of every other D1 athletic director in the country. Brad Soderberg doesn't even have direct "ties" to Green Bay. He didn't play or coach here. I know a guy who made out with Danica Patrick back in middle school, I guess that means I know Aaron Rodgers. Hiring him is only done as an appeal to the Bennett legacy. It ignores that he isn't a good D1 head coach. Certainly he hasn't proven to be better than the guy they just fired at least. We don't know if this is a true representation of the of what the athletic director is thinking. For all we know Venci is only connected to people in Green Bay who are pushing these names to him. Hire one of these guys only after truly seeing who is out there around the country but not before. Don't put lip service into it either, this better have a legitimate nationwide search.

We need to respect the Bennett legacy while living in the present and building for the future. How do we save what's worth saving of the program and develop something that is more relevant to the school's mission? The next coach needs to pump up interest in the community to get not only fan interest but economic support. Bennett, while not the most dynamic presence at first glance, achieved that over a number of years by producing a classic form of winning basketball. In these times we need a community salesman, super recruiter, and fundamentally sound coach. I'd grade any candidate in those three categories. The school needs a dude with an extremely high profile in the community and with more contacts than Bausch and Lomb.

Tulsa's words are well written. I can agree that respecting the Bennett legacy is something that can be done. I was harshly saying that can't be the overwhelming focous.
If someone from the Bennett tree is the most qualified candidate to recruit, develop players, game coach and influence NE WI fans they should be hired. The Bennett connection should be the icing but not the cake.
I am struggling with this hire currently because Gary doesn't have the best resume of the D3 coaches in the state of WI they could interview. His resume screams icing, not cake. Also, many of the people online who are actively saying some of these lower level or Bennett legacy names are people who won't be there once games start and in some cases have a history of wanting GB to fail.
I will give a call to action for the Bennett supporters who think going off of this tree will energize the community. If they really care about GB basketball like they say they do they will work on behalf of GB hoops no matter who is hired. If they really love something they can promote it with their contacts and help transfer the trust those people have in them to the program now. Saying they will help or cover the program if Gary gets the job but implying they won't if he doesn't get the job is not a good look.
In 10 days we will have a better picture as resumes will be submitted and we will know who is actively interested.
One question I have is if a search firm is involved? I know search firms get ripped on a lot but they also flush out candidates who might be more qualified but don't think they have an in with the school and therefore don't apply. If the athletic director is going to make this hire based on his own connections or who applies then the some of these current names being mentioned are going to be much more in play than I have given them credit for.
My final thought. UWGB is in growth mode as a university. The enrollment has grown and the degree offerings have as well. UWGB has conservatively run their finances for the history of the university. If they can't pay for it they don't buy it so to speak. The impact of Covid 19 is real, I think GB comes out of this better than most because they have done immediate steps to protect the university. I don't know how many hundreds of thousands of dollars they paid to Linc to move on but it's safe to say that wasn't happening if things are really as dire as some in the social media circles are portraying.

The alum and fan in me wants to see GG on the sidelines. However, my head and GG's record at a bottom tier D3 program and recent history tells us another story. If GG had the same level of success at a UW-O, UWSP, UWW, UWP, or UWRF, I think he can make a much stronger case for the GB job. He's a candidate, but I'm concerned we will take a large step back in recruiting. Just because GG played for DB doesn't mean he will get every ounce of talent out a player that DB did at UWSP, GB, UW, and WSU. That's what made DB special. We will need someone who can actively sell the program to the community but to the students of UWGB as well. We are a generation removed from the DB era and GG's playing days so any nostalgia that may get generated from GG getting the job will be short-lived unless there is a strong and consistent trend to the top of the HL. Guthrie getting more games back at the Kress will help the student draw, but the Linc era, despite not finishing less than 4th in the HL during his tenure, had a general malaise around the program. This might make me throw up in my mouth a little (since I'm also a UW fan), but we may need a PJ Fleck-type of personality to run the program. If we get an aloof, strong X's and O's type of coach, but is skidish around boosters and fans, and not anything resembling a salesman (that we need to promote the program to the community) they had better be the 2nd coming of DB, Bo Ryan, Rick Majerus, or Larry Brown, or otherwise we will have more of the same malaise that Linc had with his program....RP40 was a abject failure her at UWGB. Looked more like disorganized, second rate AAU ball at times, especially defensively.
