Everyone got what they wanted and yet people continue to find ways to bash Darner. You wanted Darner fired. Mission accomplished. You wanted someone from Wisconsin. Got that. His father is Bo Ryan. Even better. What I find amusing is if this guy's name wasn't Ryan and he wasn't from Wisconsin you all would be pissed about this hire. He was a head coach for one year at a D2. That is all the HC experience he has. Darner had more success than that at D2 and it wasn't good enough. Will Ryan may turn out to be a great coach and do a great job with the team. Maybe everyone will flock to the games because his father will be there. Maybe everyone will come because they couldn't handle the style of play that Darner coached and they need it to slow down. Whatever. Darner wasn't a horrible coach. He wasn't unsuccessful. Green Bay is a low mid major school that apparently only needs Wisconsin kids to thrive and according to people on these boards Darner wasn't able to recruit. Not sure how people are aware of all this information. I was a fan of Green Bay basketball but I have lost a lot of respect for the way the administration handled this situation and I am tired of the bashing of the former coach. Move on. Everyone on here should be happy. You are getting more of your Wisconsin people where you want them.

You're right "New Member tsissicran." No need to bash anyone, especially Darner. These are tough times in a number of ways. Let's wish everyone Godspeed. Will Ryan's resume is what it is. He didn't get to pick his father and determine to be born in Wisconsin. He deserves a break on that front as well.
Tank Hemphill doesn't get hurt this past season and Darner has a bunch more wins and might have moved on, on his own power.

It was his lack of Xs and Os and late game knowledge that cost him dearly. I agree that this was a move thats typical of a power five and not a school like gb. But I appreciate the school not settling for mediocrity and not just accepting the hand they are dealt. The writing was on the wall Linc wasn’t going to take this team higher than 3rd-4th place and a few games over 500 each year. No one should feel bad for Linc. He will come out of this no issues and a rich man. He took advantage of a poorly written contract. I will always be grateful for him breaking the tourney drought but after two seasons in a row that ended pretty much identically, it was time to move on. Talent was not an issue the past two years. I agree Ryan got the job based on name but it’s no different than Gary being considered for being an alum. It’s not what you know in life it’s who you know. That’s just the way it is.

I look at this a lot like the Mike Deane firing at Marquette when Crean was brought in. On paper, Crean's resume was OK but he had no head coaching experience. Deane had moderate success at Marquette --mostly with Kevin O'Neill's recruits.

Maybe now, but they routinely beat majors before Darner, and the conference was legit back then too, not the group of constant rebuilders it is now. The fans didn't like the style of play because it was too fast? Nope, just too sloppy. People didn't like Darner because he wasn't from Wisconsin? Nope, that was be cause of his giant ego. Nothing wrong with how the administration handled this firing. They were professional all the way. Surprised by the timing? Sure, but that was out of their control.

I really have no idea where you get the giant ego thing? In my few brief interactions with him, he always seemed humble and friendly.

I liked Linc Darner the coach and the person. I like up tempo basketball. I like basketball players from any corner of the world that want to play for UWGB, though I will admit a bias to 4 year players over 2 year players.
When TK was the coach, between the staff, managers and medical people on the bench I would hear people complain at games that they had more suits over there than a Men's Wearhouse store. Then this year Linc and company stopped wearing suits for some games and I would hear people complain that he was wearing his gym clothes to a game. As the old saying goes you can't make everyone happy all of time.
Again, I want to thank Coach Darner and his staff. You guys got us back to the big dance, you kept the team competitive in the Horizon League and you recruited some very talented players that have left the cupboard far from empty. I am sure you guys will land on your feet as that opportunity has been earned by you.
Moving forward another saying I like is you can choose to be happy or you can choose to be right. Maybe some stuff done by coaches or administrators isn't what I would do, it isn't "right." Yet Green Bay basketball makes us as fans happy.
I am very happy that Coach Will Ryan is accepting the position for Green Bay. I can't control how or why the program got to this point. I just know that a change was made and they hired someone who has the potential to be a bigtime coach for Green Bay.
I firmly belief he was selected because he will be able to identify players who can be developed into big time players. He will relate to the people of Wisconsin and keep them engaged as Phoenix fans. I believe he will be a coach who will implement a style of basketball that fans will enjoy. He will be a coach that wins bigs games. He may be Will Ryan the third but he was hired because he was the one man best postioned to lead the program now.
I have a challenge for anyone that cares about Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball. I am calling it the #3K240 challenge.
My challange stems from one basic belief that I think hangs over this program. At one point in time people think GB was a damn good mid major program. Somewhere along the way that has morphed into thoughts of being a low mid major or they should drop out of D1 or the program is broke.
Ten years ago Tod Kowalczyk left GB for the Toledo job sight unseen. He said at the time it was an opportunity to win at a higher level. Then five years ago Brian Wardle left for the Bradley job. He said at the time the MVC had a better chance to be a two bid league.
Well TK hasn't been able to win that much more than he did at GB and the MVC hasn't been a two bid league. Both coaches also had the additional incentive of higher paying jobs. The type of pay that would keep them from being poached by other mid majors.
So what is the #3K240 challenge? This is my challenge to all Phoenix faithful is to get the home game attendance to over 3000 paid fans per game and to raise an additional $240,000 per year for men's basketball. The fact of the case is when Will Ryan proves to be as good of a coach as I and many others expect then he will get other opportunities. Green Bay needs to be in a position of strength within the communtiy and university heirarchy to provide every resource needed to compete for championships. By increasing the paid attendance it will provide funds needed to invest in the program and create a kick ass atmosphere. By raising other funds it will allow the team to play a better schedule, invest in additional resources or increase compensation. We as a fan base and people who are in the passive fan category need to realize this is a fresh start on becoming a mid major powerhouse. It takes people choosing right now to be happy and not right, it takes people right now choosing to support Will Ryan. He is OUR coach and we need to give him everything he needs to get the job done.
Lets go! #3K240

During a time when we do not have major league baseball, NBA Playoffs or even Packer training camp there are a lot of sports outlets looking for story ideas to fill print space and air time. That might explain the extent of local, state, and even national attention being paid the hiring of a new head basketball coach at UWGB. It doesn’t hurt that the hire is the son of a Hall of Fame coach.
Today’s unveiling news conference was good theater. Will Ryan presented himself as an earnest young family man with a made for TV family of three boys and a young wife. Add to that the storyline of a homecoming with dad and mom in the audience. All the right notes were hit during the news conference. It will generate a new wave of coverage. The marketing value for the school and the basketball program should not be underrated.

This is a semi-rhetorical question, but why was Mark Murphy sitting up front near the podium? I understand why, but why?

Historic footnote: When the help wanted sign went up for UWGB's first head basketball coach all the finalists were interviewed by Vince Lombardi. Murphy did the same this time around. As a former AD he has some experience in this area and since coming to GB he has shown up at a number of Nix games. It's always been a focus of the university to forge a bond with the Packers but that relationship has varied over the years. UWGB's first chancellor, Ed Weidner pushed for the creation of a marching band. The idea was to be the Packers "official" marching band. Back in those days, a group like that would get a lot of national TV exposure.
Weidner was the guy with the dream of division one sports for Green Bay. He had seen the marketing value at other schools.

The press conference and the 1 on 1 were a very good start for Coach Ryan. He presented himself very well.
I appreciate the extra buzz because of his dad being there. That is great. I think the way Will carries himself it will only be a short period of time until that is a cool footnote of its own. Will is his own man and doesn't ride any coattails. If anything being Bo Ryan's son has pushed him even more to be a great coach in his own right. Green Bay Phoenix Basketball is in good hands.

The reason for a coaching move was evident during the news conference. Changing the image of the GB program is the only hope of taking things to the next level -- community support/involvement -- greater state presence and serious consideration as a mid-major program. Ryan from the get-go has displayed a stronger connection to the community and the ability to use social media and the traditional media to project a positive image for the program. Have a comfort level on all those fronts is essential and having the ability in just one of those categories is not enough in this era.
