You are making an assumption that you know the real time line of when events happened. When a kid makes a commitment and when it gets announced can be anywhere from hours to weeks based on who the kid tells. You are assuming the announcements happened immediately. I highly doubt that you are correct. Schools cannot announce commitments when they happen. They cannot announce signing during the summer after the late signing period until the kid enrolls in class. Unless the school has a great beat writer that is right on top of recruiting or the kid is a high profile recruit that actually gets covered by the national recruiting websites, it doesn't get announced right away. These recruits were not top national guys and UWM does not have a good beat writer so the time line of when all of this was announced probably isn't as accurate as you think. Jump out of the 80's guy. With today's social media we find things out in real time. Thomas committed day after his visit. Niang visited the same weekend as Thomas, but then took another visit. No need to lecture me on the process, just visit here a little more often and you will become accustomed to modern recruiting. Don't rely on beat writers, they're almost obsolete.

All I know is that if this happened in the Coach K era at GB, uwm fans would be having a field day. They get referred to a kid who flames out before school really starts and uwm fans brush it off. I get it, guys don't always work out but this can't be viewed as good news. When I look at a uwm depth chart this looks like one of their weaker teams in the last 10 years. I don't understand how fans are not calling for Jeter's head. I suppose that is why "they play the games" but I would be surprised with a winning record and top 5 finish in conference play. Having to take chances on Juco guys, transfers and academic risks at this stage of Jeter's tenure is hard to justify. Is this really a good foundation to build from? At this point I think uwm fans might start calling Jeter the "pmpmck."

Jeters has won the HL twice. He's been to the NCAA and NIT tournament including winning an NCAA tournament game in his 8 years at UWM. Pmck has coached for 10 years and has never won a league championship or been to the NCAAs or NIT. The rest of the HL understands that you don't like UWM, but you look like a bunch of tools when you make idiotic comparisons like this. (and I didn't even need to mention all of the idiotic statements pmck made over the years). Coach K is long gone so this conversation is probably pointless. However, this "idiotic" "tool" looks at facts and can't let this comment slide. Rob Jeter inherited a sweet 16 team and with that won a tournament game. Since then he made an NIT and CBI. His last two years in conference were 13-5 and 11-7. In Coach K's last two years with GB he was 13-5 and 11-7. In the same amount of time Rob Jeter managed to return uwm to mediocracy from mid major stud. Coach K managed to return GB to mediocracy from mid major dud. The end destination is the same but somehow bringing a program down seems less glorious to me. Having a head start and ending up at Coach K levels should make him the "pmpmck." If you are satisfied with that level that is fine.

When Andy Geiger was hired at UW-Milwaukee, some trumpeted the move as a break through for the school. I called it another massive misstep for the directionless institution. The latter appears to be the case with the latest rumors.
Rumor has it that in October Geiger extended Rob Jeter's contract through 2017. I warned before the season the Jeter's shortcut's in recruiting were about to sink his program. My clairvoyance appears correct. Milwaukee, despite the presence of 5 scholarship seniors, is in last place in the conference. They have a sub-300 RPI, which makes them simply one of the worst teams in the nation. All other HL teams are currently in the RPI's top 190.
Also, Jeter's team has continue with its trademark of his tenue, off the court issues. Several players were arrested earlier in the season, with charges including resisting arrest, obstruction of justice, and disorderly conduct. Typical of the lack of discipline in his program, Jeter did not suspend any players.
Extending Jeter wasn't Geigers only misstep. Instead of focusing donations on the school's only revenue sport, he instead fast-tracked a new baseball complex, and announced its construction. However, the project hasn't started, as they were never cleared to build it on the site Geiger announced. They will soon need to admit they have to go back to the drawing board for the baseball complex,. Meanwhile nothing is being done to address the fact that their basketball team is playing at a HS caliber gym.
Geiger's tenure will end soon with his only impact being to further sink their drowning athletic department.

There's no reason, with the resources at UWM that their men's BB program, should not finish in the top 3-4 of the HL almost every season. With Butler now a part of the A-10, there is a void on who will be the perennial top team(s) in the HL. UWM should be in that position to make that claim, but they are far from it.
It appears that an experienced and revered AD, but his best days behind him career-wise, is taking UWM in the opposite direction. The focus should be on the cash cow right now.
I would like to get blackpanthermke's take on the situation.....

Congrats to Amanda Braun for landing the UWM AD job. She has a mountain to climb, but I have no doubt she will succeed. Quality individual, approachable and brings a lot of experience as a player and administrator to the position.

I was shocked they didn't hire Paul Plinske, but the rumblings I'm hearing now is they couldn't afford his salary demands. They had to hire the only candidate that would work for what they can afford to pay.
Not sure what resources they actually have. Even with the move to their on campus gym, they still added another $1 million to their run-away debt in the last fiscal year. There now $10 million in the hole, and counting. They have no income, and no means of even slowing the growth of their debt.
They also have no donor support to build a new athletic facility. Their most realistic plans include renovating their present facility.
With such few worthwhile options available, I have to wonder if they really have a future in the Horizon League. They might be better off slashing their budgets and re-organizing as an independent.
If anyone can help make something out of that mess, it would have to be someone with experience at Green Bay. Amanda Braun learned in her time at UWGB how to have a succesful athletic department on a limited budget.

She isn't who I would have hired, I liked Plinske a lot more. Even if he was more expensive, he has a track record that makes me think he is worth the money and more likely to elevate uwm.

I was shocked they didn't hire Paul Plinske, but the rumblings I'm hearing now is they couldn't afford his salary demands. They had to hire the only candidate that would work for what they can afford to pay. This is absolutely not the case. I kept in touch with Paul constantly through the process. My sources in the university told me that Amanda had set herself apart both in the in-person interviews and in reference checks - she had some pretty big supporters (I don't know who they are, not a clue). MKE is going to pay Amanda about $200,000 per year, which is about what Andy Geiger makes and what our AD's have made for the last...I don't know...15 of them (is that the number AD we're on?). Add in that Andy Geiger is going to come off the books in July and paying for Paul Plinske wouldn't be a problem. Not sure what resources they actually have. Even with the move to their on campus gym, they still added another $1 million to their run-away debt in the last fiscal year. There now $10 million in the hole, and counting. They have no income, and no means of even slowing the growth of their debt. I learned some pretty telling facts about the "debt" that the department has. I'm going to have a story on it in the next week or so, but the one thing I can confirm now is that the money they borrowed initially that sent them into this "debt" came from the science department - except the science department budget didn't go down at all in the year in question - and that the "debt" is owed to the university itself. Most of the "debt" comes from interest - about $7 million is interest. A high-ranking employee in the university told me that it's basically "like owing money to your wife," and that the university doesn't really consider the program in debt because it's the university owing the university. They also have no donor support to build a new athletic facility. Their most realistic plans include renovating their present facility. We just got a seven-figure pledge for a new baseball stadium, and another donor is working on securing the land for that stadium and the attached indoor track and field facility (much like the WATTS just built at YSU). The donors I've talked to are willing to give Amanda the benefit of the doubt - most of the big $ donors supported Plinske, as did I - and their ire is mostly directed at Chancellor Lovell, who they feel doesn't have the best interests of the program in hand. We all know he's a fan, but he's definitely not an athletics-minded Chancellor in that he doesn't know what it's going to take from him to support the program the right way. Instead, like any intelligent person he surrounds himself with people who know athletics (Andy Geiger) and leans on them to make the decisions. Except Andy Geiger is so out of touch he thought the Klotsche Center would be a smart move for the program. With such few worthwhile options available, I have to wonder if they really have a future in the Horizon League. They might be better off slashing their budgets and re-organizing as an independent. Do I detect some wishful thinking, Jay? You and I both know that's not going to happen. They almost balanced the budget in fall 2011 and only lost $30,000 last season. I don't know what the numbers are this year, obviously, but as soon as I know it'll be up on PantherU. If anyone can help make something out of that mess, it would have to be someone with experience at Green Bay. Amanda Braun learned in her time at UWGB how to have a succesful athletic department on a limited budget. If any hammer has ever hit any nail on the head better than this, I'd be surprised. This is the answer - we've seen how big school guys like Andy Geiger, Rick Costello and George Koonce have done - we needed to bring someone in from our level (GB) or lower (UWW) who knows what it takes to make it work as a mid-major. From my initial discussion with Amanda, I was impressed. She's very conversational, warm and intelligent. I think she's going to impress the donors. Once they warm up to her, they're going to get on whatever bandwagon she wants them to get on. You can tell she's ready by watching the introductory press conference, which we have posted on the front page of PantherU.com. I might actually fly out to Boston and meet with her at length before she moves to Milwaukee - I've got an excuse, my sister's family lives there (my sister is a researcher in Public Health at Harvard) and I was planning to visit them anyways.

Absolutely. The rising tide raises all ships. I don't know if any of us are lining up for a higher conference, but I know we at Milwaukee are in no position to right now. Let's all root for each other to get better and do well out of the conference, then let the in-conference chips fall where they may. Some Horizon unity would be just the thing.

Geiger's tenure will end soon with his only impact being to further sink their drowning athletic department. Didn't see this post, otherwise I would have responded to this first. If you were familiar with the situation down here, you'd know that the "arrests" were ridiculous. City of Milwaukee cops decided to make a statement and crack down on underage drinking parties on campus - the neighborhood south of the main campus is little different than it is at Madison, except it's only really become this way in the past ten years and none of the homeowners are used to it. They did a PR bullshit "roll call" in the street the day of the crackdown, and went door to door all night stopping college kids from being college kids. Where normally they may write the host students up for loud noises or underage drinking and tell the others to go home, this time they came in and arrested them all, booked them and brought them to the downtown police station. Some 36 arrests were made, 6 of which were basketball players who picked the worst day to host a party at the beginning of the year. The "obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest" all came from one drunk player who went to the window, saw the cops coming up the walkway, closed the front door (it was open for some reason), and ran to the back door yelling "it's the cops!" I need not tell you it was a younger player haha. Without representation, the charges were later dropped and the player only paid an underage drinking ticket. Like I said, it's just college kids being college kids. This wasn't a Kaylon Williams situation - he probably should have had 3-5 game suspension, which would be comparable to other H-League suspensions but a bit more taking into account that the drunk dope tried running. I don't think Jeter is soft - don't forget he kicked Torre Johnson off the team the morning after Torre was arrested for assault, even before he was formally charged. Oh yeah, just remembered - the reworking of Jeter's contract eliminated "auto-extensions" for winning the conference and added some stricter rules that would allow them to fire him for cause later. I don't think any of those rules were broken, but his last contract was just very lax.
