This is the link to start this thread, a thread titled "Wardle getting some heat". It is hard for me to accept that Dave Reynolds with all of his accolades and time served is reporting a fair approach to BW and BU when he is writing articles that cause a group of outsiders to consider it negative. If you read his other stuff you would see it is more of the same. He wants access and claims to just be reporting what he sees but has numerous examples of taking subtle shots and looking for click bait. BU went to them privately and explained their position, the PJS went to the public. Why is that? The world will roll on with one less Nate Kennell article, who is really instigating a pissing contest?

It's called the First Amendment and is a cornerstone of our country. Those who try to censor free speech and an open discussion as Bradley University official are doing are subject to a public debate. The question is does a private university have the right to cut off access to a credentialed journalist? You think it's OK. I disagree and think it's stupid PR at best. It reflects badly on the school and badly on the coach. For Wardle, it opened up mentions of the whole investigation back at Green Bay and for that reason alone he needed to find a way to quietly deal with the disagreement. Sit down and have a beer with the reporter. If Wardle thinks he's getting a cheap shot he has to realize if you're in the arena that will happen from time to time. Extraneous fights with reporters or fans is a waste of time. Like I've said before he needs a Dutch Uncle -- without listening to someone like that he could commit career suicide.

Nobody is saying the PJS can't call out Wardle. No where in the first amendment does it say Bradley has to help them do so. They restricted his access to help them understand they would rather have no coverage than Dave Reynolds coverage. For some reason the PJS has their undies in a bunch over this. Basically every sports team in the country controls who they allow to speak and who they can speak to. BU has decided to have their beat writer work from an arms length instead of inside access. Look away, nothing to see here.

Thank you for your insights on how schools deal with media access. After decades of covering college sports from the upper midwest to Virginia and Texas, I did not know how schools control access. The Bradley administration is realizing to a degree their self-imposed PR snafu. pbs.twimg.com/media/D1zV9hwW0AAFolT.jpgIf I was editing their statement I would not have used any catchphrase like "fair and accurate." (balanced) It makes it a non-apology, apology -- effectively negating the effort to defuse the BS. Do they teach Public Relations at Bradley? (update) My take about the negative PR is being reinforced. Here's a Sunday message from a friend in Chicago. www.chicagotribune.com/sport...316-story.htmlThis is getting a lot of play in Chicago. Big article in Tribune today and online. Also being talked about a lot on sports talk radio. Will be a big black mark on Wardle unfortunately.

After the hatchet job Demovsky did on Wardle and Green Bay basketball, it's a smart move for Bradley to control the situation here. Would Marquette and Wisconsin ever have a beat writer spew the garbage Reynolds has? Absolutely never.

I read the article from Dan Bernstein. Although BW got BU to the NCAA's, he's probably on a short leash. If he doesn't get another job offer from a bigger program (DePaul???), once he ends up with a 12-20 record again, he's probably gone. Unless you're the second coming of Bob Knight, schools won't put up with a coach's antics, unless you're winning big and the donations keep coming in. My favorite quote from this article: A coach for whom Wardle once played spoke to 670 The Score to say he wasn't at all surprised by this. The coach requested anonymity.
"The guy was a spoiled baby," he said. "Played hard but always pouted when he did not get his way."
"He never wanted to change positions," the coach added. "If I decided to go small, he refused to play the four. If I wanted to go to another lineup, he refused to defend two-guards. He wanted to defend who he wanted to defend and play the position he wanted to play -- no exceptions. I could not even experiment with different lineups or offensive and defensive schemes with him on the floor, because it was out of his comfort level. He was just not doing it."
"Not to mention the condescending attitude toward teammates, all the sarcasm and the snide side comments."This could only be one of two people that made this remark......BWs coach at MU, Mike Deane, or BWs HS coach.

I think it is fair to guess that coach is his high school coach. Mike Deane is still in contact with Wardle from what I have heard. I doubt very much that anyone would have asked Wardle to play the 4 in college but at his size I could see that in high school. A Chicago sports talking head seems more likely to know a Chicago suburban high school coach. Besides Mike Deane never backs down from conflict, a high school coach has a lot more to lose and would much rather and request anonymity.
