Game day, noon tip.
GB was swept by UIC last year but both teams are scuffling right now. UIC isn't very big so rebounding shouldn't be an issue. However, they have several capable gaurds so hopefully the perimeter defense looks like more like the IUPUI games than the Detroit road trip.
Let's get a W! Today is the first day of the rest of the season. The run to #1 starts now, one W at a time.

Blount is apparently suspended by the league today for his behavior as well.
Amazing that it is so close based on three point shooting difference at half.
I don't like putting players on blast but McNair, Tank and JayQuan need to make better decisions if they are going to bring the ball up the court in transition. GB would have the lead with better choices in transition.
Let's go, 20 good minutes from a W!!

Green Bay wins! At one point UIC was shooting over 80 percent from behind the arc and a majority of these shots went uncontested.
In the second half, UIC went cold from the 3 point line which is the main reason why we won this game. The guys hung in there and hit big shots down the stretch. Still not a fan of the offense because at times it literally is 1 on 5.
But I will keep it positive and take the win.
Last year we could/should of beaten both NKU and Wright State on their floors but let it slip away late. Hopefully the guys remember that from last year and go down there and play GREAT basketball.
Side Notes: Looks like Green Bay had two recruits on hand behind the bench, anybody have any scoop on that? No Jevon Smith again on the bench.

Prayers to Jevon and his family.... Prayers to him and his family as well Much needed bounce back win. Much cleaner game today and the guys did a great job on both ends of the floor to put the game away at the end. UIC was undersized as well, so the match up seemed better personnel wise. McNair took advantage around the basket with his skill set. Thought that Bell could have played more minutes and been effective. Schwartz continues to disappoint- such a liability on the floor without being a threat to make a three point shot. I enjoyed seeing Linc get after the crowd at the under 16 in the second half. It was after a good defensive stretch by the team and GB flipping a two point deficit into a 4 point lead. The crowd was not into the game at that point and I think the crowd and the guys rallied from that point going forward. One win next weekend will go a long ways for this team getting a home game in the first round of the conference tournament.

I am very happy that the team was able to put together a solid second half and earn a victory. With or without Blount I will take it and hope that this is the beginning of a momentum shift.
I don't think that some of the guys I mentioned in the first half were under more control in the second half but they certainly had more success with the decisions that they made.
UIC was a good team to go with the smaller lineup against. Manny didn't get any clock and Cody played his way to the bench pretty quickly with his defense and turnovers. His shot still looked confident even though it didn't drop. McNair did make some plays down low. I do worry that Linc will try to go this smaller route against bigger teams like NKU and WSU because I don't see it working.
Coming off of a solid effort against IUPUI I was surprised that Hunter didn't get in the game. Especially when UIC was 9 of 11 from deep at one point. I definitely like the way Bell keeps the ball moving in the half court. He is one of the few guys who doesn't stop the ball and tinker with it before making a decision. He just keeps it moving and he keeps moving.
As for the elephant in the room, the defense, I was frustrated yesterday. When UIC was loading up on 3's it also came at a time that GB was making many questionable decisions. One time Tank was pressuring the inbound pass and nobody helped on his guy in transition who hit a 3. GB gets very few deflections and hardly traps, what is the point of having Tank do that if you don't lock down the front court? A few other times UIC hit from a foot or so behind the arc when GB guys had their hands down. If you are going to pressure the ball 90 feet away, why give the same guys a foot of room to pop 3's? The place where I was the most frustrated is the miscommunications on the switching defenses. I think some of the guys give up switches so easily and the teammate they are exchanging with isn't expecting it and ends up giving up a 3. Again if you are going to pressure the ball 90 feet away then from 20 feet away guys really need to keep that pressure up. In the second half on one possession McCloud didn't move a foot and in a switch with Tank they gave up a wide open 3. This was game #20, that stuff can't happen. If guys are too tired to play pressure defense get other guys in the game who will if that is the style they are coaching too. The team is going to score a bunch of points in most games, so it really comes down to cleaning up the little defensive mistakes and more effort on the glass in lieu of more size.
I can say that the guys didn't get rattled being down 10 and Linc certainly coached them back into the game with 2 first half timeouts. I still believe these guys have the talent to make some noise by March.
