Last fall Nix fans were wondering what was happening with recruiting. No signees in November, a young and inexperienced team on the court and a rebuilding season at best on the horizon. It wasn't a ground zero season but the on-court growing pains were painful to watch. Khalil Small was the man but the supporting cast wasn't ready every night. When Cohen the 3rd arrived at mid-season we saw some sparks of what the future could look like. Kameron Hankerson had a 30 something game late. PJ Pipes showed flashes all season but let's face it unless your name is Brunson, Wojciechowski or Hurley -- the life of a freshman point guard can be a nightmare against experienced teams. Perhaps if Manny Patterson hadn't been injured Green Bay might have been able to mount a run in the conference tournament. They did finish strong in the regular season even without Patterson.
On the opening day of the spring signing period Linc Darner and Company have signed three JUCO players. All top scorers and defensive players on their respective teams, one of them a second-team All-American. They are battle tested in the tough environment of JUCO ball and should provide immediately athleticism and hopefully maturity. Darner clearly doesn't want to go through another rebuilding season in 2018-19. His latest edition will be fast and deep but may lack muscle inside. As things stand now the team will have to rely on constant pressing, speed, slashing to the basketball and outside shooting.
2018-19 is the season where the rubber will meet the road one way or another for RP-40 Basketball in Green Bay.
