Going to just the top 4 teams would be really bad in my opinion. The league has done a lot of things with this tournament that are against the wishes of the fans. With that in mind I am actually surprised they made one good choice here and are keeping this as a three round tournament.
They are likely waiting to see if UDM is eligible before they can finalize a format, at least publicly.

I like it. The double bye is a good way to reward your top two teams for a successful regular season. I also like re-seeding for the quarterfinals and semifinals to make it as hard as possible for a fluke run to the finals for the really low seeded teams like we've seen recently. They also set it up so that even if UDM's postseason ban is held up the #3 seed would just get a bye to the quarterfinals. I still think the Monday/Tuesday dates are brutal but they're locked in due to TV rights. I'd rather do the whole thing on campus sites but Indy is a decent spot if they insist on doing a neutral site tournament, however playing at IUPUI's gym is dumb. That being said I think the bracket is about as good as it could've been considering the other two things I mentioned.

The Horizon League wishes it could be the MVC. Step #1 could be copying the format of the MVC tournament. You know the widely regarded best mid major conference tournament even without Creighton and Wichita State. They have date equity, dates that people can go to and make the bottom teams play in. What is the old saying about reinventing the wheel?

I think Cleveland State Community College in Tennessee would be able to beat the real Cleveland State at this point. They’ve at least got enough guys to fill a roster

Agreed great Non conference mid major schedule. I am guessing that they aren’t required to play Power 5 guaranteed games.

I'm torn on the WSU schedule. On one hand it has fun and winnable mid major games on it. On the other hand it is going to take some help for them to rate highly in the metrics. I think they would be a #14 seed in the NCAA tournament with this schedule.
The league has to get it's best teams in better games against teams that can really help the metrics.

I am not sure what is so great about it, 2 non D1 Schools (Central St and Urbana) and two SWAC schools ? One OVC school and One Mac school ? GB'S schedule is much tougher. We are at UCF on Dec 10th as well.

We are at UCF on Dec 10th as well. Wright State has the money to buy a couple of SWAC schools. The NET does not penalize you for playing those teams as much as the RPI did, just beat them by the formula max. The non D1s do not affect the metrics and the rest of the potential games are all brand name mid majors. I could see Wright State going 10-3 out of league and with what they have coming back, could be close to 25 wins come Horizon League tournament time. This is not the formula to get an at large- but could get them to the 13 line. GB schedule is much tougher. Wright State will have more wins and some of them will be better wins than GB can get outside of the 5 "buy games". Two different ways to approach it with two different schools and budgets.

Agree 100%. I thought you were saying their schedule is tougher. I wish we could buy games as well. Your point is well taken, would way rather be 10-3 going into Conference play than 4-9.

May be 4-9 in the standings but our books should be a little fatter with the money made playing in a few of these buy games. Hopefully all this cash pays off in the future.
