Not many division one schools across the country have three verbal recruits at this stage of the process. The recruiting cycle seems to be pushing back more and more into the early fall. Darner and Company have a great start on what needs to be a big recruiting class. Because of defections with the change from Wardle to Darner, recruiting initially was a matter of filling holes in the roster at the last minute -- something that was done so effectively the Nix made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the early 1990s. Late juco recruits Cooper and Hurdle were a key to putting the program over the top.
Now a senior heavy team has a year of training with the new race horse basketball style. Because of the Darner coaching philosophy full court pressure and a quick offense will require a deep guard rotation. The Nix seems to have a pipeline on that front. After the coming season the question will be the front court depth, interior defense and rebounding. Jordan Fouse was a unique player who came into his own under Darner and Company's tutelage last season. Can Hurdle replace that void this season and after his exit is there a player or potential recruit able to play that role? Tosa West's,Alou Dillion might have been that player but he opted for foreign travel heading to South Dakota State.
This season should be fun. The team seems to understand the program's new identity. This latest recruiting cycle has six scholarships available. GB is half way home with verbal commitments from Coleman, Bell and Chevalier. Does GB go high school, JUCO or transfer to fill the remaining spots? Last year there was a surprise incoming transfer, Warren Jones, who showed up at the Nix first practice session.
