There's something to be said for coaching at a state school. You're part of the pension program and that is not a small detail. Ask Rob Jeter. After years at Platteville and Milwaukee he has a nice safety net. It priced him out of a lot of other jobs when he was a hot commodity. Dick Bennett is another story -- teaching on the high school level, coaching at Stevens Point, GB and Madison. Many don't think of it but that pension is worth something. Current GB assistant Randell Herbst has the kind of resume and Wisconsin roots that would make him a logical head coaching candidate for the Nix. That said -- Darner has and is doing well by Green Bay. He has installed a unique system and has a quality staff. As a Nix fan you have to be supportive of Darner and his family. I have faith in his character and the AD to make things work long term for the school.

Hopefully this is the start of more off season coverage of the Phoenix. They didn't do very much if anything last off season.

They have done a great job of getting Darner out in the public this year. It is the complete opposite of last year. Well done GB.

Can UWGB find some money to put up a bill board or something along the highway when the season draws closer. Have to generate more interest this season.

Can UWGB find some money to put up a bill board or something along the highway when the season draws closer. Have to generate more interest this season. There were two, to be exact, this past season. One on Ashland ave (mostly in an industrial park), and one by the Bus station downtown. Not exactly the best marketing strategies.

Probably the cheapest spots to put it. Step up your game a little bit and put them in on 43.

Chevalier will keep another local player on the roster with Botz/Lowe graduating. Ultimately it comes down to having good home dates and promotions.

I wonder if the Florida Gulf Coast job opens if Darner throws his name in the ring? Looks like it would only be a small pay increase but it's a good mid-major program and gets him close to his family in Florida.

Any coach has to prove himself at every level. One good season rarely does it. Dick Bennett had a similar career path to Darner. Bennett established himself at the D3 level and got a shot to establish himself at a mid-major. He was at GB for a decade. Rob Jeter is another example at UWM. He got some interest in his two years but no takers because they wanted to see a track record at the D1 level. Jeter was at UWM for eleven years. Unless your Dad is Rick Pitino or John Thompson you will pay a lot more dues to reach the high, high majors. You have to admit Tony Bennett got a well deserved fast track. Being Dick Bennett's son didn't hurt his career.
Like it or not there's another fact in hires. AD's love the blow dry, hair gel, boy next door look.

I feel it's at best a lateral move if not a slight step down. Given his new recruiting class and strong recruiting presence in Midwest it looks like he's trying to build for future success in GB!
