It seems in recent years the only off season coverage the paper does is when they are handed a news release. Three recruits have been signed in the past week and no story. I see where Scott Venci posted something on Twitter today regarding the Horizon League Conference Tournament but again that was a spoon feed news release.
If you work at McDonald's care about the hamburgers kid.
Fortunately in this era fan webpages and official school Internet pages there's information out there but still if the PG wants me to subscribe give me some content. I'm willing to pony up.
I remember talking to a GB reporter about a decade ago who told me he would be called on the carpet if there was a story out on the Internet and he didn't have it tracked down, verified and in the paper. The pointed question he got is why didn't you have it first?

I have not even seen an official news release from the university regarding the signing of the three recruits. Makes me wonder if they are only verbals at this time. Venci had a week long gap from Twitter, unusual for him. Vacation??

I think Scott is allowed to take a vacation, though the paper could have someone fill in for him. All 3 recruits are signed, so I'm surprised there hasn't been an official release.
I think the PG coverage has been much improved the last 2 seasons.

Maybe Scott is waiting until the spring signing period is over on 5/12 to have a column on the signees. We may have 2 more recruits by then.

Scott is the beat reporter. If he's on vacation that's cool. If that's the case the PG needs to figure out coverage. A student intern with access to a phone and the Internet could knock out a story in about an hour. We're not talking deep investigative reporting and the expectation isn't something that would get a prize named after Joseph Pulitzer. The editors of the PG clearly don't care about being competitive in this area. To the paper's credit a few years ago they were doing some cutting edge sports video but that creativity and drive seems to be gone.

I don't think that there are many people in the Green Bay area that care about the Phoenix signing three guys from out of state that no one in the area has heard of. I think if they were local kids you definitely would have seen a story. It might have made the paper if they didn't sign on NFL draft weekend, but I don't really think it's a huge concern.
The locals will embrace these young men when the season starts, but unfortunately until then the priorities are: 1. Packers 2. Packers 3. Packers 4. Packers 5. Packers 6. Brewers 7. UWGB
However, I'd rather the GBPG ignore GB than write stories about how parents are upset that their kids got coached too hard.

You're clearly right about priorities in the mind's eye of the PG editors and much of the public. At the same time a short story of a few paragraphs is not heavy lifting for a professional. It doesn't have to be "War and Peace." I've worked in the business most of my life. Even with cutbacks the PG could do better. There's a lack of creativity and competitiveness. What Sid Hartman did for years in the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the tidbit columns Charley Walters does in the St. Paul Pioneer Press -- that would be a perfect way to allow the PG to stay on top of all local sports. www.twincities.com/twins/ci_27907146/charley-walters-twins-owner-jim-pohlad-totally-disappointed

Can the press gazette do better, Yes they could but they could also do worse. Look at Milwaukee. They are lucky to get an article per year. So I consider us lucky to have venci and his articles. His Twitter and articles have kept the average fan involved in a way they would not have.

In fairness to the GPG the Phoenix website and twitter accounts have been lacking any hoops information as well. No word on the assistant coaches or the three players.

I'm wondering if there is a strategy involved with a lack of formal announcements on the coaching staff. Three of the likely hires have been taken off their former employer's webpages. Am I correct that at least one assistant has been on the job and cited in Green Bay for weeks now. Packer Steak Fry, etc.

According to what I was told first hand this is a done deal and those that could be taken down from websites have been taken down. (UNO now had NO basketball staff.)
The announcement delay must be a grand strategy.

I have had no reason to read press gazette sports in years.
If u like uwgb basketball ur better off reading this site.
News gets here faster than venci could ever get it
If press gazette was smart they would pay someone per article off this board to write uwgb for them.

I think this is just another manifestation of the esteemed MSM caring about whatever they deem to be important and ignoring everything else.
Coverage of college and high school basketball in Florida is generally dismal particularly in larger markets like South Florida. An exception would be Lakeland, FL with the Ledger/FSC Mocs and possibly the Tampa Tribune/Mocs where the level rises to existent, but minimal. Even there you will find scant off-season coverage.
Gives fora and blogs a raison d'etre.

Bump. Not a big change but GB basketball scores will no longer be in the print edition of the GBPG the day after a game.

My wife likes to have a newspaper in hand otherwise I would switch to completely digital. Between the increased cost of the printed edition and the lack of coverage it seems like they are pushing paper subscribers away.
I can get through the printed paper in a few minutes because for the most part I have already read it, sometimes days earlier.
