LinkBuried in the story: “There are some challenges with nine schools that are difficult to overcome,” Karr said. “On the surface, you may ask what’s the difference if you have 10 or 12 teams or nine or 11 teams? But the reality is that nine and 11 are a lot more difficult numbers to work with. “We’re hoping to get to 10 schools as soon as possible,” Karr added.
Among schools under consideration to become the 10th member of the new WCHA are Wisconsin-Green Bay, Iowa State, Minnesota State Moorhead and Alabama-Huntsville.
Officials at Wisconsin-Green Bay, Iowa State and Minnesota State Moorhead have discussed adding Division I hockey to their athletic programs.
I am 1000000000000% behind this!! I wonder how this would effect the budget of the athletic department? Playing conference games up in Alaska has to be crazy expensive. Probably would also be a huge blow to the Green Bay Gamblers USHL team

Interesting. The schools denial didn't deny an interest in hockey, just conversations with the WCHA.
Boosters would need to make a massive commitment to raise the money to start hockey. It can be a revenue sport. Title IX would be a minor issue, a mens sport would be cut.
If Phoenix Hockey and the Gamblers shared the Resch, could that lead to a movement to replace the Brown County Arena with a new basketball only facility to house the Phoenix and the HS State Tourney?

I would LOVE a D1 hockey program at UWGB, but I don't think it would happen......
If it did, I would think a Kress Center expansion (to 6000 - 7000) would be in order to house the men's program and the WIAA State Basketball tourney.......
BTW.....Is it now confirmed that GB will host the tourney??

The tourney coming to GB is not a done deal.

Unfortunately for NE Wisconsin BB fans, I have a hunch the tournament will stay in Madison. I wouldn't rule out a one year trial run, but from what I hear an initial committment whether it be 3 or 5 years is not going to happen. I hope my sources are wrong.
This would have been quite an economic boost to the area, not too mention a shorter driver for a ton of loyal fans from the Lakeshore, Fox Valley and North Central WI fans.

Here's even more about the potential move of the State Tourney to Green Bay. It would be great to see the hotel issue resolved. My group always needed more rooms for Friday and Saturday, but was always charged for Thursday for each room too. It looks like the Madison proposal is full of holes. Seems like Madison only has the tradition leg to stand on. Problem is, part of that tradition is declining attendance. Madison officials continue to say the Kohl Center is where the kids want to play. Isn't that just because that's where the State tournament is held? Kids will be just as awestruck by a packed house at the Resch. As much as I loved my annual trip to Madison, I'll be stunned if the state tournament stays there.

The BB capacity of the Alliant Energy Center is about 9400-9500, is a much older facility than the Resch and doesn't have much concourse space the last time I was there, not much in the way of hotels and restaraunts in the area, and has the charm of a 1970's office building.
The Resch is a little larger, next door to Lambeau, and a short walk from a slew of hotels and restaraunts, not to mention that Bay Park Square Mall is less than a mile south of the Resch.
Madison may claim tradition, and if that's the case I'd rather see the tourney go back to the UW Fieldhouse, than go to the Alliant Energy Center. At least there's history and tradition at the 'ol Barn....Other than that I would like to see the tourney at the Resch.

I have never had a problem getting a room for one night for the State Tourney.
I am hoping the WIAA gives Green Bay a shot at this. I would think it would meet with resistance from some of the fans from the South, but they'd get over it. I think the entertainment district, better parking, the Casino (if that interests people that travel to a State BB tourney), and heck even Lambeau would be a nice draw.
The Alliant Center will never get it. While the Fieldhouse has a ton of history, this event deserves better than that aging facility.

Great move. Am I overstating this, or will this have a tremendous positive impact on Green Bay Phoenix recruiting? I also think this could lead a revitalization of City of Green Bay HS basketball. Here is an interesting commentary on the move by Nic Kartos of Wissports.

This is a disappointing development. As much as I hate Bucky Badger and his loyal band of followers, Madison is where the state tournament should stay, and it should be played in the Fieldhouse.
Someone on our board suggested if we had our arena built we should have gone for it, but that's worse than the Resch since we will build our arena at only 7k or so.
It should stay in Madison.

The Fieldhouse is a horrible option. It was a complete dump when the Badgers finished playing there and is worse now. It doesn't even approach compliance to present day safety standards. It also doesn't have a video board. You'd be better off playing in a parking lot. Green Bay's entertainment district is 2nd to none. The city knows how to throw a party. The local hotels are high quality. Unlimited parking is exclusive to Green Bay. The Resch Center is an outstanding venue that is perfect sized for the event. The involvement of the Packers will enhance the experience. Green Bay will be a huge upgrade to this event.
