For more than 25 years my responsibility was to produce news stories. For most of those years the responsibility went beyond just my self but included making sure an entire staff was developing product. It wasn't easy and I have a lot of respect for those who continue to fill column and air space.
That said I was extremely disappointed with Mike Vandermause piece in this mornings Press Gazette. The basic premise was the Nix screwed up and didn't deserve to be in the NCAA Tournament. When a man bites a dog that is news. Yes the Nix failed to win the conference tournament and yes we live in a no excuses society. Vandermause subscribes to the "lets kick them while they are down" school.
The 2013-14 version of the Green Bay Basketball Team is a unique collection of talent and had a remarkable season. Everyone already knows it could have been better. There's probably only one more chance for Green Bay residents to see this team in person as the squad enters action Tuesday night at the Resch Center. Despite the denigrating comments from Vandermause this team is worth watching and supporting. I hope fans turn out. His column didn't help.

I'm relieved you didn't put a link that garbage, because it doesn't deserve the hits. I've long believed that Vander Mause doesn't even write these Green Bay basketball opinion crap, it's really a different coward who's afraid to put his name behind it. I recognize the flow from a different hack.
Whoever the source, don't bother reading it, it's 3rd grade material from someone who is clueless about basketball.
Don't get worked up over this either, the best revenge is living well. The Press-Gazzette pays poverty level salaries. Don't get mad at them, it's easy to see why they're bitter over anyone who finds success.

Some writers seem to write attack pieces in order to stir up emotion and get views and people talking about them. Its a garbage way to write and they dont deserve the views. We have the same type of reporter down here in milwaukee by the name of Dave Begel. Used last years 8 win season as an excuse to call for all of milwaukee athletics to be shut down. They aren't reporters. They are narcissistic jerks who just want easy publicity that attack pieces get. Dont let it get to you. You deserved a spot. I was shocked you didnt get one when they announced virginia was a number 1 seed. Its a shame. You could have kicked some ass in the tourney.

Begel did a bigger hack job but he did it in a medium that doesn't dominate for the attention of the local audience.
I thought the Mike V. article was weak and misguided. Along the same lines I had someone loosely associated with the program tell me after the Harvard loss that it didn't matter and only the HL tournament matters. I am guessing that person wishes we had the Harvard win right about now. I just think local people need to start thinking bigger than just the HL tournament. Anyway, this is a very good team. Yes they controlled their own destiny and came up short but so too did every bubble team.

Say what you want about Rob Demovsky but he is a fantastic writer who cares deeply about that program.
We've probably talked GB hoops 20 times this season. He cares, even when some of the real loose screws in the GB fan base went so far as to send hate mail to the PG or accost him in front of his wife and kids.
I know you guys want everything to be sunshine and roses from the beat writer, but that's not their job. That's Gavin's job, to be the fire breathing partisan.
You guys have been gifted. Matt Menzl should be national within 5 years. Even Venci was okay this year.
This article? Total shit. Vandermause probably puts more effort into shits following Mexican food.

I like and respect Rob. (although I have disagreed somewhat at times) My post was not directed at him. The Vandermause was denigration of a team without giving a ounce of insight and clearly not the work of a professional.

Here's the email address for the person who put his name on this garbage in case you wanted to let him know what you think: mvandermause@greenbaypressgazette.com
Again, it's probably not something to get working up about simply because nobody even seen it. That rag had no readership. The huge spike in interest in the Phoenix this season was caused by increased coverage on the radio and TV news. People like John Maino and Justin Felder have found success talking Phoenix basketball. The public was starved for information and didn't know where to find it.

Some of college basketball's biggest names said GB should get in. Even on the selection show Sunday night, it was mentioned numerous times and when the host asked the analysts said who got the biggest screwjob, they said SMU and UWGB.
Vandermause must not have watched that. He knows NOTHING about hoops, only what he hears when he's half listening to the beat writers or on radio or TV. So don't take it personally.
To say they shouldn't even have been considered was just an idle piece of written diarrea from someone who doesn't know any better.

A legitimate news story tells you something you didn't know or looks at an issue in a way you hadn't thought about before. The guy at GB did neither. If he was doing anything more than a down and dirty space filler he would have done some homework and quoted some authoritative sources on the NCAA Tourney selection process. A compilation of comments would have shown a level of investment in his work. The other was just pulling something out of his ear. No he doesn't and shouldn't be a cheerleader but he does need to work at his craft.

Who is Mike VanderMoose ? never heard of him before ?
Honeslty tho, there are guys on this board that do better jobs investigating and reporting than the scrubs they find at the press gazette.
Takes work to dig thru recruiting news to find out who ur favorite teams targets and offers are, you think they would figure it out but they dont.
Anyone who watched the selection show knows we were one of the last four out. Reason it hurted as much as it did, is because we were so close. This guy writes an uneducated article and gets paid. Basically trying to get a reaction as a heel. Atleast Rob Deovsky could write a heel article get people pissed off, this guy just sounds like an uneducated office worker, who is just learning about college basketball. 70 percent of the office i work is these people. Anyone with a PC could have written that article. Stay away from the heel angle buddy, Rob is alot better at you that . Prolly wont see an article from this guy in a while cuz he is a jobber.

My father was a newspaperman all his life. I went to visit him at the nursing home today. We talked about the Vandermuss story. His response to the piece today was this. "It's a column. Columnists are entitled to their opinion." He said what the beat writer should have done was interview some people about why GB didn't get in. He said his whole career he tried to get readers to understand the difference between a beat writer and a columnist.
Glad I didn't buy tickets for the game tonight. It looks ugly.

You have your loyal fans, then you have your fair weather fans. I'm not gonna be one of those fair weather fans or band wagon jumpers. When a special season gets derailed by injuries you find out who the real fans are. But you still need the fair weather fans to pack the house when their winning.
I give fans of any team a lot of credit to stick by their teams and stay positive when times get tough. It's always easier to attack or jump off that wagon.

Sent from my SCH-R970 using proboards 2 things Scott Venci has been a real good reporter this year so why change? The incidient with Rob was a 70ish y/o man yelled at him telling him he did a terrible job reporting. No this shouldn't have been in front of his family but the guy was walking past Rob's house. No police report was ever requested, Rob blew it out of shape, he described it as being accosted but didn't think enough of it to even tell the PD about it. It probably was a neighbor who didn't like him?
