The Badgers need the Kohl Center for postseason Big Ten Hockey starting in a few years so the WIAA is looking for a new venue to host the state boys and girls high school basketball tournaments. The Resch Center has made a bid to host the tournaments, and the WIAA has also talked to the US Cellular Arena in Milwaukee as well as possibly returning the tournaments to the UW Fieldhouse. The Resch hosts the WIAA girls volleyball championships in fall so they already have a relationship together. Selfishly I'd love for the tournaments to be held in Green Bay, but I feel like these need to stay in Madison and the Fieldhouse would be a great venue. Its a smaller, more intimate venue and the place would absolutely be rocking. They've made some renovations to the place since the last time the WIAA held its tournaments there

Most recent news on bringing the State Tournament to Titletown. I know the tradition is Madison, but something seems right about going for the gold balls in Green Bay. I've been attending the State Tourney with a large group for years. I'll miss State Street, but but I've already been missing how great it used to be already. So many of the great bars have really become outdated dumps with unwatchable TV's and barely functioning rest rooms. It is getting to be that the games at the Kohl Center are the only highlight. Games at The Resch Center would be even better. The KC is a little too big for the event, The Resch will be packed. Every seat at The Resch is a good view, the upper deck at the KC is just too far away. As for as mystique goes, I'll take being in the shadows of Lambeau over the sillouette of the Capitol anyday.

It has been a long time since we have heard any news regarding moving the tournament to Green Bay. As more time passes, I believe the move is less likely. Who knows what kind of deals are being made?

Decision on future location of WIAA basketball tourneys not expected anytime soonThe wait continues. The WIAA is not expected to announce whether it will keep the state boys and girls basketball tournaments in Madison or move them to Green Bay for at least another two weeks. The organization plans to continue discussions regarding the tournaments at its annual meeting in Stevens Point on April 25. No announcement likely will be made before then, and it’s not clear when one will be made after the meeting takes place. “It’s a little difficult for me to say,” WIAA executive director Dave Anderson said. “I haven’t talked to my board now since our last meeting in early March. What they might think or feel or what questions they might have, I really can’t guess that right now.” The 11-person WIAA Board of Control approved in February a recommendation from Anderson to accept a bid by Ashwaubenon-based PMI Entertainment to host the basketball state tournaments as early as next year. The WIAA issued a statement on Feb. 16 that said it would enter into a five-year agreement with the Resch Center if the University of Wisconsin couldn’t accommodate the tournaments in accordance with the terms of the existing agreements. Scott Venci writes that the WIAA will announce their decision today. Most think it'll be going back to Madison, and Green Bay has just been used as a negotiating tool. I'm not in that group. I don't see any way you can choose Madison without the guarantee of the Kohl Center. If UW-Madison has solved all of its scheduling issues with the KC, I think that would have been in the news. I think the tournament will be coming to Green Bay. I know some think it needs to stay in Madison because of tradition. I think that's weak. Short shorts and peach baskets were also basketball tradition. Traditions can't stop progress. The State Tournament in Green Bay would make accessibility much easier, and the City of Green Bay has agreed to make it more affordable. The Packers have agreed to be involved, and they make everything 1st rate. Titletown should be the home of the State Tournament.

I think the WIAA got this one right. As great as it wouldve been to move the boys tournament here as well, it belongs in Madison at the flagship university.
They were also really smart to bring the girls tournament to Green Bay. The Kohl Center is way too big for that tournament, it will be a much better fit at the Resch in a more intimate venue, plus the girls will get to play in the same city as the best D1 women's college basketball program in state

The boys tournament moves up 1 week, so they could guarantee the availability of the Kohl Center. The girls tournament needed to move to a new site because the Kohl Center may not be available. The boys tounament no longer coincides with the NCAA tournament.
