Should be another good match-up tonight at the Resch Center. Larry Shyatt will have his team ready to defend. Phoenix need to continue to defend, while cutting down the turnovers. How they're working to do that was Rob Demovsky's topic today. Be sure to check out uwgnphoenixphan's blog for his game preview. I'll predict a 5 point win for the Phoenix tonight, while holding the Cowboys under 42% shooting and winning the battle on the glass.

A nice W for the Nix. The guys have got to cut down on the turnovers. With a young team I think that is fixable before conference play. Cougill provided a real spark off the bench and owned the boards. He's a strong complimenbt t o Alec Brown.

Noticed Williams did not start tonight. Currently have a gaping hole on the defensive end of the floor starting games, and it is handicapping them severely. If they continue with the same starting lineup, they may as well go zone, because they start out 4 on 5. While Sykes' ceiling is much higher, IMO they need Terry Johnson on the floor more. He provides a more deliberate, patient approach in the 1/2 court offense. Hopefully Cougill continues to catch up to the pace of the game. Has the best stroke on the team. Passed up a few tonight that he could have taken, but I really like his makeup. Played long stretches tonite. Doesn't bottom out of energy. Asked for a break and when he didn't get it there was no drop off in production. Did GB end up with an extra timeout tonight? Thought they had two left when Wyoming was at 5 fouls and Wardle took a 30. I believe he still took two after that? It would be fun to tape every 4th game this year and watch the growth. It will not come in leaps in bounds but in solid increments. Anyone know why the entire Whitefish Bay team was there tonight? In town for the Packer game tomorrow? Too bad they didn't bring Diamond Stone along from Dominican

Wardle wants the identity of this team to be a team known for rebounding and defense. It's there. Terrific defensive effort again tonight. They held Wyoming to 32% shooting, and once again won the battle on the glass. Baker, and later Turner, completely took Cruz out of the game, he came in averaging 20 ppg. Turnovers continue to be an issue, but the 14 tonight is down from the previous 2 games. Horrible shooting night again, we knew the offense would be a work in progress. They took fewer 3's tonight, and did hit a pair at crunch time. Avoiding turnovers is huge for this team because it pounds the offensive glass so well. Here's Rob Demovsky's game blog

Outstanding anticipation as a post defender. Very good passer. Needs to go into the stating lineup. It was interesting to see a lineup late in the game including Brown, Cougill, and Turner all at the same time.

I edited my post before reading your question about Sykes... no his ball pressure is outstanding, and I like the the energy he brings to the defensive end. Offensively, I think he just needs to grow into the position and it will take awhile for the flow to improve, like it does with all young teams. I noticed at this point the offense is held back a bit by the fact they are not a real good pass and catch team on the perimiter. They are limited in feeding the post on the run and continuing the motion and getting action off of it. It is taking longer and more energy, but that will get better, with time. It will be fun to watch KS develop.
I think AB needs to be more patient when he receives an entry pass down on the block (wait for the double/triple team to collapse), and then reverse it or dump it back out. That will allow more spacing on the perimiter, making the pass/catch more efficient. Part of that is being able to keep it high (brought one down last night and got stripped clean) the other is his strength and being able to fend off all of the arms and hands digging in. It all comes with time and playing together.

Good win for GB especially after a slow start.
Once again turnovers were looking like an issue. Once again the shooting is just really hard to watch. The difference this time is that they made enough plays when it mattered.
Really hard to believe that Jarvis Williams hasn't brought much to the table yet. Also, I am still waiting for Turner to hit his stride. He is showing some more shooting range and still hustles but he hasn't been as noticeable this year.

I didn't notice Turner's one hand release as much last year as I am this year.
Across the board, this is a more athletic team, but less skilled. They need to find a way to make sure the ball gets in the hands of their scorers/shooters as the clock wears down - it will come, but will take time. The problem is, that time will be against VA and two league games, then the UW's, MU's etc... There are pieces (offensively) but we will need to be patient.

Wyoming picked up an elusive road win this past weekend, and did it in fine fashion, winning @ Colorado. Wyoming is now 9-1, with an RPI of 73.

I am pretty sure Idaho has a road win over Washington State as well, so they probably aren't a push over for GB. It looks good that GB handed the Cowboys that one loss.
