Yes there is a very good article. One of the things it talks about is calling it U of M, Just like we should be U of GB. Madison is UW not us. We're GB and should be proud of it!

I guess you missed the news today, Boga is out too.

Your right that there is more than one way to skin a cat. Your Panthers are going to get skinned a whole lot of ways next year. 20 loss season? At least that will bring an end to the Jeter era.

The time may be right for UWM to drop its athletic programs

If ever there was a perfect time for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to bite the bullet and take a huge and dramatic step, this is it.

Now is the time for UWM to end the folly of a collegiate athletic program and get on about the business of building a reputation in some ﬁeld other than women's cross country or swimming and diving.

UWM is going through athletic directors who come and go with little logic in their arrival and lots of secrecy in their departures.

The latest departure is Rick Costello, who was ﬁred a couple of weeks ago, just a year and a half into his reign that was highlighted by a rebellion of his soccer players, the resignation of a high proﬁle coach and a nutcase dream of creating a Division I football team on campus.

Nobody said why he was ﬁred from his $200,000 a year job but everybody wished everybody else well and success in all future endeavors.

Interesting article. Sounds like the author had made similar delcarations in the past to drop UWM Athletics.....Although he may not want to admit it, athletics (especially in D1) also serves as a de facto marketing arm of the university. Although UWM has expanded it's academic reputation, it's not an ivy league school, or Northwestern for than matter which is just down I-94...It would be an embarassment if UWM DIDN'T have an athletic department, despite being the 2nd largest university in Wisconsin.

It sounds like UWM Athletics will go through a mass perge and maybe a cultural lobotomy before their program is back on the right track. Remember, the UWM once got to the NCAA's in men's basketball (cheating or no cheating aside), and was a top 25 men's soccer program.

Maybe the cumudgeon who wrote the article should have read what blackpanthermke wrote.....UWM will need to re-engineer how they hire their AD's going forward and improve the culture of the AD's office, but that doesn't mean shutting down athletics.

It's not interesting, it's a talk radio shock jock d-bag ploy to gain website hits. He wrote the same fucking thing two years ago.

If it were up to him, neither of our schools would have athletic departments.

Unable to hire an AD on there own, UW-M has hired 73 year old Andy Gieger to a 1 year deal until they can figure out what to do next. Why is it so hard to just hire a competent AD?

Funny how that wikipedia resume leaves out what Andy Gieger is best known for, scandals. His tenure at Ohio St ended after numerous academic and recruiting scandals in multiple sports. Gieger is everything that is wrong with college athletics.

Here's Don Wan Walker's story at jsonline of the Gieger hiring.

The only good thing about this is Gieger puts to bed the football issue at UWM anytime sooner. Here's what gieger said about football:

"You never say never," he said. "But it's something I couldn't imagine in the next decade. It's not practical. That's not the popular answer, but thinking of football as a way of attaining money is fool's gold."

At least with the pipedream of football shot down they can now start to concentrate on reality.

Gieger was simply hired as window dressing while UWM stays in a stall. Too bad for them that the shot clock in running down.

Andy Gieger gives the finger to UWM season ticket holders and moves all their games from the Cell and its downtown location to their on campus location. The move is extremely unpopular on the Milwaukee board amongst season ticket holders. Part of the draw for their games was the fact that they were in the entertainment district.

It's a sad commentary of their program that they could even consider moving all their games to an old, dilapidated 3,400 seat gym.

With Butler leaving, this move doesn't help the Horizon League pretend it's still a viable conference.

I see Andy Geiger is off to a great start at UWM (cue sarcasm).....If he wanted to gauge the level of student interest regarding UWM basketball being played on campus and to see how much support he would get in the future for an expansion of Klotsche (or a new on-camps arena), he could have had UWM split time between the Cell and Klotsche; Weekend games at the Cell, weekday games at Klotsche.

I would like to get blackpanthermke's take on this.....

I did like the quote from Franklyn Gimbel (Chairman of the Wisconsin Center District) in which he said "....the district had poured a substantial amount of money refurbishing the arena for UWM. He called the U.S. Cellular Arena the best arena in the state for fan viewing.".....The Cell is ok, better than the old Brown Co. Arena, but not the best arena in the State. I think the Kohl Center and BMO Harris Center (formerly the Bradley Center) may have something to say about that.
